Same Time, Next Year Philadelphia Theatre reviews
Magical 80s night!
This great show was so much fun with such great music. I hope iHeart does it every year in LA. I wish the bands had more than 30 minutes each, but I understand why they didn't. The cool videos of 80s movies, TV, and pop culture played in between with very short transition time between bands.
The crowd loved Tears for Fears! I thought it was odd that they were the first band since they are bigger than some of the others, but it was actually a good idea because it got the crowd excited from the very start. Loverboy was ok. I enjoyed them, and there were definitely people who loved them. I think most of the crowd were New Wave fans instead of classic 80s rock fans.
Billy Idol really got the crowd going, standing on the speaker stacks, taking off his shirt. There were a few times it sounded like his voice was a beat behind the music, but I heard the same thing with Rick Springfield, so maybe something was off with the sound. Billy got tired and winded with just a 30-minute set. I hope he's more rested for his Las Vegas residency.
Rick Springfield got a better reception than I expected. He's really good live, but I mean, he plays fairs for free all the time. You can see him practically every summer. LL Cool J was front and center trying to take a selfie with Rick behind him. People seemed really excited to see Rick. He was a good choice for the show.
Missing Persons were definitely the weak link. I knew they would be. Dale seemed subdued, and the set lacked energy. But she was also the first singer to really talk to the crowd (she thanked us) and introduce her band (not original, so why?). I think Berlin would have been a better fit for this concert. There definitely needed to be a female-fronted band. Next time maybe Joan Jett, the Go-Gos, or Berlin?
Kris Jenner introduced Same Time, Next Year. She was booed so horribly the whole time she spoke. You couldn't hear a word. It was so horrible that I was embarrassed for her. Same Time, Next Year were amazing, and Boy George was in a great mood. Because of the 30-minute limit, there were so many hits they didn't get to sing. :( No Tumble. No Victims The crowd LOVED Same Time, Next Year. I hope they tour on their own this summer. Same Time, Next Year ended with Bowie's Starman (like they often do). It was a very nice version, and the crowd appreciated the tribute to Bowie.
This has been one of my recent favorites. I go to a lot of concerts.
